Position Overview

The Lab Assistant (Laboratory Technician) plays an essential role in supporting the delivery of safe, effective, and engaging science education across the Secondary School. The role involves preparing laboratory materials and equipment, maintaining safety standards, and ensuring that laboratories are well-organized and fully functional.
This position requires a detail-oriented, proactive individual who can work collaboratively with teachers and contribute to a safe and efficient learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Preparation
  • Prepare chemicals, materials, and equipment for laboratory experiments.
  • Set up and dismantle laboratory apparatus for practical lessons.
  • Prepare demonstrations in collaboration with science teachers.
Chemical Management
  • Ensure safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals.
  • Maintain accurate chemical inventory and storage systems.
  • Ensure proper labeling and safety documentation for all substances.
Equipment Maintenance
  • Check and maintain laboratory equipment, including probes and sensors.
  • Maintain safety systems such as fume hoods and eyewash stations.
  • Repair or coordinate the repair of laboratory equipment as needed.
Laboratory Organization
  • Organize laboratories and storage rooms to ensure efficient use of space.
  • Manage equipment inventory and track usage.
  • Order chemicals and laboratory materials in coordination with the department.
Safety Support
  • Monitor and support laboratory safety procedures.
  • Assist teachers during practical lessons when required.
  • Ensure proper waste disposal procedures are followed.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant training in Science, Laboratory Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience in a laboratory or school setting preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes
  • Understanding of laboratory safety standards and procedures.
  • Strong organizational and inventory management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks.
  • High level of responsibility, attention to detail, and professionalism.
